The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back running back Spencer Ware. In a corresponding roster move, the team has released wide receiver Gehrig Dieter.
Ware, who was with the Chiefs between 2015 and 2018, will give the team depth at the running back position after starter Damien Williams missed last week’s win over the Raiders with a rib injury. Darrell Williams injured his hamstring during that game.
Prior to signing Ware, the only healthy running backs remaining on the roster were LeSean McCoy and rookie Darwin Thompson.
Ware signed with the Colts in April but was put on the physically unable to perform list after having ankle surgery. The Colts cut him in September and he hasn’t played in 2019. Ware has had workouts with the Cardinals, Raiders and Buccaneers.
