Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones confirmed on 105.3 The Fan on Friday he’s had discussions with the Dolphins, according to Pro Football Talk.
While he didn’t mention him by name, speculation suggests the Cowboys could be interested in trading for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, who is seeking a trade outside of Miami. As we reported yesterday, the Dolphins have granted him permission to seek a trade to another team as he is looking to get away from the tanking situation.
“We always . . . when you hear rumors, you get calls,” Jones said on his radio show, via Jon Machota of TheAthletic.com. “You have conversations between myself, Jerry [Jones], Will [McClay]. We’re always checking around and seeing what’s going on. We have a pretty steady diet of visiting with other teams. We’re always trying to improve our roster.”
Fitzpatrick’s agent, Joel Segal, also represents Cowboys WR Amari Cooper and DE Taco Charlton. The Cowboys are in the process of attempting to re-sign Cooper, while Charlton could be moved as he was a healthy scratch in Week 1. Dallas traded for Cooper in October last season by sending their 2019 first-round pick to the Oakland Raiders.
Fitzpatrick was selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft by Miami and he allowed just a 53.4 passer rating in the slot last year. He’s set to make $13.45 million over the next three seasons.
The Cowboys host the Dolphins Week 3 in Arlington.
