The future of Jason Garrett as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys remains uncertain as it’s believed barring a deep playoff run where the Cowboys reach the Super Bowl, he will not be retained for next season as his contract is expiring.
It appears Dallas was looking to move on from Garrett last season after they were eliminated by the playoffs by the Los Angeles Rams. For those that do not remember, Garrett was on the hot seat when his team started 3-5 but they turned it around to finish 10–6 and win in the wild card round against the Seattle Seahawks. However, once the Rams eliminated the Cowboys in the NFC divisional round, Jerry Jones considered his options.
The Cowboys used back channels to reach out to New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton to gauge potential interest on him returning to Dallas. Payton spent time with the Cowboys as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach from 2003 through 2005.
Payton ended up using the interest as leverage to land a five-year extension with the Saints that keeps him in New Orleans through 2024. Given that, the Cowboys will have to look elsewhere if they choose to move on from Garrett.
