Quarterback Geno Smith will sign with the Seattle Seahawks, reports Josina Anderson.
On Sunday, the Seahawks cut Smith just as it looked like he had won the team’s backup QB job to Russell Wilson after the team released Paxton Lynch on Friday. As it turns out, Smith won the job but he was released because his 2019 salary would have been guaranteed if he made the initial 53-man roster.
By cutting him, Smith didn’t have to clear waivers as a vested veteran, per Bon Condotti.
Ultimately, the Seahawks went through a loophole where they didn’t have to guarantee Smith’s contract for 2019, knew he wouldn’t have to clear waivers and re-signed him the next day.
Smith, 28, will play behind Wilson and would start should something happen to him. Seattle opens Week 1 at home next Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
