Latest On NFL Expanding Regular Season & Playoffs

NFL owners have shifted their negotiating focus with the NFLPA in talks for a new CBA from an 18-game regular season to 17, games, reports Mark Maske and Daniel Kaplan.

The 18-game proposal never had widespread support among owners and the NFLPA strongly opposed it. Maske reports the focus in negotiations between the NFL and NFLPA has become 17 regular season games and three preseason games.

Per Maske, expanded playoffs could also be incorporated at some point.
The strongest possibility would be a change from 12 teams making the playoffs to 14 teams.

The current CBA expires after the 2020 season.
