Wade Phillips Out As Defensive Coordinator For Los Angeles Rams

Wade Phillips was informed on Monday that he will not return next season as the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams.

Phillips met with head coach Sean McVay on Monday as the team evaluated the 2019 season, which saw them finish with a 9-7 record and miss the playoffs one year after playing in the Super Bowl. The Rams defense in 2019 under Phillips ranked No. 13 in total defense and No. 17 in scoring defense.

Phillips, 72, was hired in 2017 and helped McVay turn around a franchise that had not been to the playoffs since 2004 and had not had a winning season since 2003.

In Phillips’ first year with the Rams, they went 11-5 and won the NFC West. They lost a wild-card playoff game to the Atlanta Falcons. Last season, the team won the division and finished 13-3 only to lose in the Super Bowl to the New England Patriots 13-3.
