Things went from bad to worse for the Jets and their quarterback situation on Tuesday when it was confirmed that Trevor Siemian will miss the remainder of the season due to an ankle injury he suffered in a Week 2 loss to the Browns. However, they could get starter Sam Darnold, who is out with mononucleosis, back after their Week 4 bye as originally expected.
Rich Cimini reports that Darnold said Tuesday the goal is for him to return Week 5 against the Eagles. Doctors have told him that is his estimated return date.
Darnold was shockingly ruled out for the Jets’ Week 2 Monday Night Football matchup against the Cleveland Browns with the virus. The team was originally hopeful he would be good to return after the team’s Week 4 bye, however, Ian Rapoport reported the timetable may be “overly optimistic.” It looks like it was just right, if Darnold is being honest about his doctor’s target goal.
The virus may have played a part in Darnold going 28-for-41 for 175 yards in Week 1.
